Do you leave letters from the Tooth Fairy when they come to visit? I will NEVER forget the day that my daughter lost her first tooth. I was stupidly emotional about it. Although I appreciate that sounds absolutely RIDICULOUS, there was something about seeing that teeny tiny little baby tooth in her hand, her big gummy smile gleaming back at me and spotting her NEW first grown up tooth poking through the surface of her gum that made me feel a little bit sad – an official sign that my baby was starting to grow up!

When it came to the Tooth Fairy's first visit. I honestly didn't have a clue where to start. Being almost 35 at the time, it had been a long time since my tooth fairy had come to visit! I didn't even know what the going rate for the Tooth Fairy was these days, and everyone I asked seemed to have different opinions. The general consensus for the Tooth fairy going rate seemed to be a shiny £1 coin, with perhaps a £2 coin for the very first tooth. A big fan of recording memories, I decided to start leaving letters from the tooth fairy, as fun way to record each milestone.
Tips for the Tooth Fairy's visit:
- Ask the child to leave the tooth in a small pot or on a little cushion next to her bed (as retrieving a tooth from under the pillow whilst your child sleeps is almost as stressful as bringing a stocking from Father Christmas!!) There are lots of tooth fairy products on the market (Not on the High Street have loads!) but you can also pick up some really cute handmade items on Etsy.
- Print your free tooth fairy letter in advance (see my FREE Tooth Fairy Printables below!). My tooth fairy letter templates below are customisable, so you can print the letter in advance and store safely, so that on the day where a tooth falls out unexpectedly, you don't have to worry about the tooth fairy having too much wine and forgetting to come! You can simply then add in the child's details and information about the tooth and where they lost it. Although simple, they make a great record of their teeth and where they lost them. Preparation is key!
- Trust me from someone who does Elf on the Shelf and wished she had never started… Don't start anything too elaborate with letters from the tooth fairy that you aren't prepared to replicate many MANY times again. Children have a LOT of baby teeth. If you start making really intricate designs from the tooth fairy or hand write an elaborate tooth fairy poem, you may regret it on the nights where you just want to go to bed and haven't had time to repeat it at the same quality. Keep it simple, and then it is one less thing to worry about.
- At some point in their tooth fairy journey, you will probably experience panic from your child because of a swallowed tooth! Erin accidentally swallowed her tooth whilst eating ice cream at school and was clearly so focused on licking her vanilla that she didn't notice it come loose in her mouth! Don't panic, the tooth fairy is fully equipped to deal with a swallowed tooth – I have created a special tooth fairy letter template (see below) where there is no physical tooth for the fairy to collect. In this situation, the tooth fairy still provides a reward, and bases this on the quality of the Childs other teeth.
- Mix it up – Occasionally it is fun for the tooth fairy to leave a little motivating gift or tooth related present to ensure children keep up the good behaviour and continue to brush their teeth well morning and night. Some fun tooth fairy present ideas include:
- A fun new toothbrush (the flashing ones are lots of fun for younger children!)
- A coupon for a tooth brushing app (many of these are free but the child won't know this!)
- A book about the Tooth Fairy
- A tooth fairy colouring in sheet.

There are LOTS of tooth fairy ideas on the internet especially ideas for the Tooth Fairy's first visit, but to help make us parents lives a little bit easier, I have created some FREE tooth fairy letters to download and print at home. Letters from the tooth fairy are a great way to record the milestone of each tooth, and can be decorated with glitter or sparkle to add a more authentic fairy feel. Whenever the tooth fairy comes to visit in this house, we print a tooth fairy letter using my tooth fairy letter template, add some glitter glue to the fairy's trail and then roll it up like a certificate with a little bit of sparkly blue ribbon. First up, this free tooth fairy letter printable is for when your child loses their very first tooth. We recommend that you give them a bit of a bonus payment for their first one! You can personalise this letter with where they lost their tooth and comment on the quality! There is space to write in your child's details and add a personal message if you wish.
